1
Warm-up: agree or disagree?
8 min · Individual → pairs → class
Students respond to the four claims about laziness, willpower and motivation, then defend their choices. Record the class position so it can be revisited after the video.
Teacher note: The video challenges statements 1–3; do not reveal this before viewing.
2
Key vocabulary: say it your way
10 min · Pairs
Students study the seven definitions, cover them and paraphrase each term to a partner. Finish with quick retrieval: give a definition and elicit the phrase.
Teacher note: Prioritise emotion problem, present self/future self, path of least resistance, tiny first step and guilt.
3
Watch part 1: test the model
8 min · Individual → pairs
Students mark six statements true or false and correct the false ones orally. Use feedback to trace stress → avoidance → instant relief → repeated loop.
Teacher note: Answers: F, T, F, T, T, F. Insist that false answers are corrected, not only labelled.
4
Watch part 2: the three tricks
10 min · Individual → pairs
Students capture each trick, what to do and an example. Pairs then create one new example for each strategy.
Teacher note: Expected strategies: shrink the task; make the right path easy/remove distractions; forgive yourself.
5
Role-play: Present Self vs Future Self
12 min · Pairs
Pairs act out the assignment scenario, using the persuasive language box. They swap roles, choose a new scenario and end both conversations with a specific tiny first step.
Teacher note: Reject vague endings such as “try harder”; the agreement must take about two minutes and be observable.
6
Discuss and rank
9 min · Groups
Groups revisit the opening myths, debate whether action creates motivation, rank the three strategies and discuss self-forgiveness versus excuse-making.
Teacher note: Ask groups to cite the video or role-play when defending their ranking.
7
Personal two-minute action plan
8 min · Individual → pairs
Students identify a real avoided task, name the feeling, define a two-minute first step, remove one distraction, write a self-forgiveness line and choose a start time.
Teacher note: End with a quick spoken commitment: task + first step + exact time.
